Beginning at the northern end of the Arabian Sea.. the first port, is Karachi, which serves the Punjab, with its large area of irrigated cultivation. The work
of constructing a fine quay on the northern side, with a depth of 34 ft. at low water, is now in progress. Karachi is the nearest port to Europe, and although it may be many years before its geographical position will bring it into close rivalry with Bombay, thetrade there must be enor- mously increased when work on ous of the greatest of the irriga- tion, projects-the Sukkur bar- rage is brought to completion.
Next comes Bombay, and, farther south, Marmagao, with a comparatively small trade, which, in tonnage, is largely made up of manganese cre; At.the lower end of the east coast, there has been established a ferry service be"] tween India and Ceylon dealing with passenger, and goods traffic. Proceeding northward, Madras įs reached.
Here extremely difficult condi- tions have been surcessfully over-
come.
