TARIFF BOARD'S REPORT ON. THE INDUSTRY,

Simla. August 12.-The Tari Board's report on the question of the protection of the Indian ship building industry has been issued.

Straus & Calcutta Tsingtau ria Shanghai Ninge & Shanghai Tientain Sandakan g Haiphong

The Board holds that the claim far protection fails, but that the shipbuilder is entitled to equality tarlif treatment in the sense that his position, could not be

worse than it would be if there were nu Customs duty either on unfabri-Straits and Calcutta cated steel or on ships.

Osaka via Kobe Sandakan

The Board recommends that the protective duty should be either 10 rent, ad valorem, or Rs. 35 per ton, whichever is the higher.

The Board holds that the British builder ordinarily cannot under- juuote and very few ships importer by the Indian builder have an ad- santace because Mat barges are ever imported. When orders for teamers and other craft are placed in England the price is not the devisive factor but the quility and time of delivery. It was, however, gecessary to ensure that the duty

on the fabricated steal halls of fimparted Vessels should not be less han the doty which the Indian builder pays on unfabricated steel puts of ships.
