Shanghai, August 20. The U.S.S. Asheville" arrivod in Shanghai yesterday shortly after tin after having encountered one of the worst typhoons that it has ever been the lot of a ship of her size in these waters, and certainly an American battleship, to fight and survive. A few of the freaks which typhoons are so wont to play were related by the members of the erow. Probably the greatest of these was the way in which the wind shifted, almost miraculously, just when the vessel was being literally dragged to certain destruc: tion on to the rocks of Namki
Island.
According to officers of the ship, reports went out by various obser vation stations just previous to the breaking of the typhoonoindicated that the centre of the storm would nasa to the west of the course on
which she was steaming and, should this have been correct, there would have been little need for foar that she vessel would have been driven on to the rocks of one of the various islands to the west.
