Still In Doubt,
It appeared, however, that the officials in Shanghai know little about the Bank's present state of affairs. It was explained that all accounts were not in and it was impossible in ascertain at present how much was owing to brokers, some of them had not. el, as rendered their stálements. Evên- tually it was decided that all creditors should submit their Claims Lo the Bank's officials hefe, who would in the meanwhile approach the head office in Hongkong for a [statement as to the concern'a poui-

Inquiries as to the whereabouts, of a Mr. Lee brought a response that he was last heard of on June 22. when he wrote and said he was feeling owing to the stral's of the past, "few weeks.
Since then it had been stated that he had gone away, but it was not known where.
Another question as to whether, the Bank intended to carry on in the present premises, having re- gard to the big overhead expense, elicited the information that the officials--had arranged to pay the landlord three montha' rent in con- sideration of being released from a year's lease which did not expire until December next.
A creditor. How can we pay three monthe rent when...we have no money?
E
An official stated that the rent would stand as preferential claim. The staff had already been reduced.
Another creditor pointed out that the local Bank was only a branch of the Hongkong concern. and if Hongkong had plenty of money, why was not some sent to Shanghal to clear up the situation
The owner of the plaintiff firm proved the lease, and said he learn ed of the breach through a lotter sent to him by the defendants. stating that the lease had been transferred.
Mr. San said that he knew nothing about the company's affairs." It was liquidated in Hongkong and everything was done from there. He had no knowledge of the letter sent to the plaintiffs. It might have been written by order of one of the liquidators. He had been away from China, on sick leave. for three years, and he only returned in February this year,
