British Shipping 'Difficultion.
The financial editor of the Lon- don "Times" writes:
A reduction in the dividend on the F. and QDeferred stock may have the effect of bringing home. to many persons that the British shipping industry continues to encounter difficulties. At the same time, the reputation of the company for conservative finance should not be forgotten. The present rate of 10 per cent. for, the 12 months ended September 30 compares with 12 per cent for the previous corresponding period. Lord Inchcape dealt with certain relevant points at the annual meeting last Decem- ber, when he said that the management hoped for a revival of the normal sources of revenue, but suggested that if they had to recommend a lower dividend this year, the shareholders would "accept it philosophically." He went on to say that, as long as he remained chairman, he would with the consent of his colleagues, of which he was confident, "ob- serve the conservative policy which has built up the. P. and O." It is many years since the dividend on the Deferred stock has been as low as 10 per cent... but it has to be remembered that a few years ago there were bonuses of stock. For each of the four years to 1923-24 a divi- dend of 12 per cent. was paid.
