HOW SHAKESPEARE WROTE.
SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION.
No scholar has won more prizes.| in the new and fascinating game of finding out what Shakespearo meant by minute examination of his spelling, his punctuation, and the tricks that compositors played with both than Professor Dover Wilson. He may almost be cal}-{ ed the inventor of the game.
In his delightful lecture at the Merchant Taylors School he tried to take us into. Shakespeare's study and show him at work, put- ting in his stops, and spelling the words according to his own fancy. From the new method of simply looking closely at these small things in the text and manu- scripts, that the literary critics of Ands have resulted
It might even be news to some of his hearers that Shakespeare wrote in a kind of script which is long since obsolete. He used the "English" handwriting, in which Professor Dover Wilson thinks he was either old-fashioned or pro vincial instead of the Italian, which, of course, is what we write bo-day.
Shakespeare, like every other, Elizabethany spent his words as he liked, and the fact that he had a fancy for certain eccentric spell- ings there is the famous example of "scilens" for "silence"-has its bearing on the claim, which Pro- fessor Dover Wilson supports. that we have in the interpolated pages of "Sir Thomas More" an actual piece of his manuscript. The compositors in these times were the only people who spelt by rule, and it was suggested that our modern spelling is largely the invention of sixteenth and seven- teen century compositors.
Another new line of research is, of course, punctuation. In Shakes- speare's day punctuation was based upon rhythm and pause, and not as it is now upon syntax, Professor Dover Wilson's re- searchés into Shakespeare's punctuation have yielded interest-i ing evidence to support his con- tention that Shakespeare's pune- tuation was intended chiefly as a guide to the "ictor how to speak the lines when to pause and drop his voice, and so on, For this reason the punctuation of the earliest printed texts becornes ex- tremely important, and the lec ture showed us by recitation what new and subtle: effects can be obtained by accepting the old punctuation sa, in fact, a guide to the spoken word.
By sympathetic study of what happened when the Elizabethan compositor was left to struggle with the peculiarities of Shakes- peare's spellings, contractions, and ways of forming his letters, Professor Dover Wilson has pro- duced many brilliant new emenda- tions. They are, as he confessed, only guesswork, but, then, em- endations of Shakespeare's text are never anything else.
