HOLIDAY RACING.
SOME NOTES ON THE NEXT MEETING.
SHORTAGE OF TALENT.
[By "Patrol,]
With the race meeting only four, days off, owners and trainers are as yet more or less undecided as to which events they will start their ponies for.
Conditions have been almost entirely against training. Twice during the close season the course has been washed out. In a morn- ing gallop since work re-started, it has been necessary to pick one's way out to avoid the ups and downs. With the track against fast going. hardly any pony has put up a time of which there is anything to write home about." It seems that when the names go up the only safe thing to go by will be reputation, that mysteri- ous quantity known as "form," and jockeyship.
Still it should not be hurd to pick winnera as fields are almost bound to be on the small side. One sound estimate is that four or five will be a good average for each race. There is not only a shortage of ponies, but also of riding talent..
Mr. Buck, his many friends will regret to hear, is indisposed and it is unlikely that he will be down Lieut.-Com. for the meeting.
