WHE COMBINATION of two- fabrics has appeared among the more smartly dressed Women off and on during the

Summer, and now this fetching fashion bursts upon us as an established mode.

So affertyyn as the que of black

and white crere that I bave recurring calls for costumes

which combined these two mediums. The drawings on this page are repro- ductions of the last four costumes I have designed.

The smartly dressed woman never grows tired of the combination of black and white, She favors it in batfits of the type shown here, and she likes it in the tiny cheeks which are unusual now because they are seem less often. The white dress with fine pipings of black, or the black frock with fine white pipings, are expressions of the favor accorded this striking contrast.

The drawings speak for theta- selves, so there is really little-nced- to go into explicit descriptions. Where the costume is an ensemble, the upper part of the frook is usually white crepe, with the lower partion

the dress black satin, and the short coat of black satin lined with

the crepe.

The ensemble of the large figure is Most effective, with the deep V slit in its black satin cost to reveal the white beneath, and the wide white erepe scarf striped with applied benda of the black satin.

The chic little costume at the right is ao smart in the design of its simple coat and frock that anyone would do well to have the same model copied later on, in Fall materials. Jersey

or kaaba, for instance, in ten and brown would make a most effective little suit to be worn during the first days of early Antuma..

The vogue for black and white la present at all times of day. Costumes in these two colors are worn for afternoon «dresa joeća. sons, and the morning sporte affairs exploit black and white la linan, crepe or flannel, more often than any other, combination.

For evening, the vogue for b nolor chiffon daude frocks again favors black and white as its most at- tractiva interpretation. For instance, #1 a recent opening of one of the smartest New York supper clubs, there was an ̈ex- tremely well-dressed gathering which in

loded various actresses of stage and serven fame. Among them, the black and” white' shiffon dance frock was the most outstand- ng fashion of this evening. At the same, dms, the models exploiting this bi-color made differed sufficiently in line and treat- ment so that no two of them were alike.de

Speaking of combinations, the use of two contrasting fabrics promises to play a more important part in fashions with the ' coming of Pall:"Frocks and coats from the Freneb openings are prone to combine vel wet and taffeta, or kasba and satin, and this tendency will doubtless become more promi- ment as the season advances, pregna

At present, contrasting materials are „favored in blouse and skirt ensembles, with very good effect. For instance, gray crepe satin makes a very attractive blouse, to be worn with a gray georgette-skirt which- achieves its fuinem by a series of Inverted pleats across the front. Another smart indication of the vogue i ja. black and white is keen in the hew wide chiffon weight hose. These come with a stocking of the pair showing a slender open- *work auklet, which gives the effect of ar ankle bracelet. The same design is als seen in tan chiffon hose with a russet-colored yanklet, the effect being the samo as that given by a fine gold chain auklet worn be- neath the stocking, a vogue which was smart several seasons igo, g

To return to Summer fashions, the variou hotel roofs about the city are gay just now with evening dancers, who come out with varied and interesting dance frocks, most of, them of excessively simple design, d iry One interesting and very cool looking izdance dress was made entirely of fine black lana.
