"Strike one" the referee (on the left) calls when the bulsman (on the right) makes a swipe. The much protected man in the centre is the entcher-Sir Claud Sovern. played in that position when the Governor pitched--who was "snapped" just as he hold the ball after the batsman had made a stroke and missed...
THIS WEEK'S FLOOD DAMAGE,
Embedded firmly in the mud y'ng up against a house opposite the Yeung Wo Nursing Home at Happy Valley is a badly damaged motor-car of which only the tyre tops and part of the steering gear can be seen. This car was instrumental in saving the house shown as it acted na a buffer againçt a torrent of rushing boulders, carried down in the heavy rains of last Monday night."

The cause of most of the damage to the far end of Happy Valley--the break in the retaining wall above the Nursing Home. Water, and debris tumbled headlong into the valley below, tearing down trees and flooding the Race Course, a part of which (in the left, topi is shown bathed in slime. To the right of the gap in the wall is the Nursing Home which had a lucky escape..

Old style Chinese houses at Wongpelchong village, roofs of some of which gave way at the height of the deluge, neceraltaiing the ald of the Police and Fire Brigade. An injured old woman, caught in the falling debris, had to be removed for attention.
Canying away the earth which had blocked up Wongneichung village. In the background can be seen an ineffective water-gate" which, however, did not prevent the mud completely blocking the round-the-Vailey tram route. The quantity of mud carried down can be gauged by iti height in the foreground as compared to the epolies,
