NEW SILK TAXES.

THE INDUSTRY MUCH MOLLIFIED

(Reuter's Service.)

LONDON, May 21, The Silk Association in a state- ment, says it is quite satisfied Fegarding Mr. Winston Churchill's new proposals and expresses the opinion that they will benefit the silk industry.

The duties on waste and spun give a small margin to the British manufacturer, but sufficient to save the Industry from extermination and undoubtedly to result in increase of employment.

LONDON, May 21.

The artificial silk interests have made a statement to the effect that Mr. Churchill's new proposals either reduce to a minimum or counter balance the harmful effects of the original proposals.

Therefore they are generally acceptable.

On the other hand a meeting of the West Riding trade at Bradford passed a resolution opposing all taxes on raw material and excise taxes on artificial silk.

ITALY AND GERMANY,

(Reuter's Service.)

KONE, May 21. An important pronouncement tipon the proposed guarantee pact was made by Signor Mussolini in the course of the foreign debate in the Senate. He said there could be no question of a triple pact only, but at least a quintuple pact which, with other possible pacts, should be under the aegis of the League, with Gem any as a member. He favoured granting Germany permanent seat on the League Council.

Signor Mussolini expressed the opinion that not only the frontier on the Rhine but that of the Brennero should be guaranteed. Ho was strongly opposed to au Austro- German union, on the ground that that would mean that, Germany would control the most powerful bloc in Central Europe. He added that Italy was not disturbed by President Hindenburg's election, which might lead to that concilia- tion which only firmly established Governments could effect.

ITALY'S WAR DEBTS.:

ROME, May at. M. Mussolini said that Italy's war debt was a hundred milliard lire whereof fifty milliärda was owing to America who, contrary to Press reports had not presented aisy official demand for the open ing of immediate negotiations for the liquidation of the debt, but friendly non-¿fficial conversations had occurred. Italy would do her ulmost to meet her debts as far as her erorcmic situation permitted, but in view of Italy's great sacrifices in the war and the fact that her wealth was only one, fifth of that of France and incomparable with that of Britain, Italy was entitled to something more than the most favoured nation tient- ment, and if a “meratorlum wes 'accorded other debtor nations be would ask a still longer moratorium for Italy. It was manifestly unfair to give a conquered nation, like Germany - belter fresiment- jhán one of the allies.
