LAST NIGHT'S SMOKING CONCERT.
THE CHINA MAIL.
200
The last occasion on which His Excellency the Governor Sic Edward Stübbs, will have met the local Volunteer Corps was that of the annual smoking concert and presentation of prizes which took place last night, nearly members of the Corps' attending.. Among the guests were Com modore A. J. Stirling Major Drake, Major Willson, the Hon Mr. H. W, Bird, Mr. J. A. Plummer, and Mr. TJ. Gaisford- St. Lawrence. The chair was occupied by Lt. Col. L. G. Bird, Commandant of the Corps.
to
Prior to His Excellency present- Ing the prizes Lt. Col. Bird addressed the gathering and spoke of the present strength and work of each section. Although the numbers of the Corps. had increased 480 he would Inol be satisfied. until every fit man in the Colony- was a member. Laying stress on the part the Corps was playing in the local sporting world, Lt. Col. Bird said they hoped to make it the premier sporting association. They could put a team in the field in any sport and there was only the They question of the ground. hoped, however, to enlist the sympathy of Mr. Creasy (laughter). Before presenting the prizes His Excellency, emphasising that it was the last occasion on which he would have the pleasure of addres- Volunteers, con- sing them as gratulated Lt. Col. Bird on the success which had attended his efforts to bring the Corps to high state of efficiency and recalled the time when after the war he (His Excellency) had been called upon to decide whether service in the Corps should be compulsory. In deciding in favour. of voluntary service he thought| that they would be able to rely on the public spirit of Hongkong to provide adequate assistance to the military garrison and in his own mind he had limited possible figures to 300. This had been ex-1 cceded by 50 per cent and he hoped that it would increase still "further in future years.
