It is the practice of the steamers in question to tie up at West Point. In course of time, a fair- sized non-Cantonese colony grew up in the Western district. Many were bona fide workmen, sen farers, itinerant traders, hawkers, ! &c. But in the last few months, there came not a few who, without fixed abode or occupation, were nothing more than human parasites. When any of their fel- low provincial came ashore with money, they attempted to sponge on them, and very often a fight resulted. Others took to bullying the law-abiding Northern and Yunnan men in the district, and street rows were very commor. A few became adepts at cargo pilfering on the water front, while Official confirmation of the bath- instances of molestation were ing reported. Before

undertaken. in much the same spirit as was D'oisy's gallant effort, arranged in the first place as a "sporting" affair, but later operated with the full knowledge and sanction of the authorities who have taken in hand the arrangements with the various Governments over whose terri- tories he will pass.

The machine flown by the Italian is a Lorraine seaplane model, built in Italy, and its behaviour in the course of this extremely difficult undertaking will furnish valuable data for the Italian Government.

Although Comm. S.. Carrara informed the "China Maik" upon enquiry that the flight had not progressed sufficiently for any- thing definite to be arranged, it was thought that the landing place for Hongkong would be the same as for the other aviators, between Stonecutters and Laichi- kok.

At a later stage, if this was agreed upon the charts which were available could be forward- ed to the aviator.

As this is the first long distance fight to the Far East this year, the progress, of Commander di Pinedo will be followed, with in- terest and it may be that it will be but the forerunner of many similar attempts, although it is doubtful if other airmen will choose a route which appears a little strange on the face of it. Capt. D'Oisy covered 10,000 miles in something like ninety flying hours, however, and maintained the extraordinary average of about 110 miles per hour, and if it can be done once there is no reason why it should, not be done again.

Aviation enthusiasts and the general public will join in wishing the latest aspirant to long dis tance flying fame a successful voyage and a more fitting entry into the Colony than the two Portuguese airmen who had the hard luck to crash whilst on their way to Macao and to arrive in Hongkong by train!
