LOCAL RESIDENT'S GRUE- SOME DISCOVERY.

A Portuguese gentleman, who was travelling in a chair up Glenealy at 10.30 last night, made a gruesome discovery whilst on the stretch between Caine Road and 'Robinson Road. On looking into the nullah below, he noticed not very far from the road the outline of a man hanging by the neck from a tree. The discovery was immediately reported to the police:

On visiting the scene, the police officers found that the mag was a foreigner about 40 years old. and that life was extinet.

Amongst papers found in the man's pockets was a passport bearing the name H. E. Gray, From this it has been established that the man is an American, and had been in the Colony only a few thayo.

The funeral will take place this afternoon from the mortuary, where the body has been lying Since last night.

The rounding up of beggars has resulted in the despatch to Canton of 202 persons in January, 82 in February, Cz in March, and 234. so far this month; making total of 580 since the begin- ning of the year. In addition there were nearly one hun' dred in the hands of the police this morning, and they will be sent away to-night along with any other captures which may result during the course of the day.

Many of those sent to Canton take the earliest opportunity to return to the Colony, as so far as the records go. 30 persons have been sent back twice; eight, three times; five, six times; four, ten times; and one, a small boy, nine times.

So far 17 persons have been charged and convicted.

The woman who had a cheque for $300 in her possession when caught begging was sentenced to fourteen

days' imprisonment. The small. boy has been sent to Po Leung Kuk. After the completion of her sentence, the woman will be brought before the Secretary for Chinese Affairs, when the cheque will be handed back to her. The money repre sented subscriptions by a. few Chinese sympathisers

Melbourne; April 27-The Minister of Defence confirms the report that the Australian airforce-in-ordering four seaplanee at a cost approximately of. £8,000 each. They will be of the Seagull Amphibian type. This machine has been adopted in order to obviate the necessity of establish ing a seaplane base at Sydney Reuter.

To link up the upper levels with the City of Victoria by Bridsh made motor buses capable of seat. ing 36 passengers each, a scheme merchant has been refused per formulated by a local Chinese

It was the intention to form a company with a capital of $500,000, to run the buses from Pokfulani Road (outside the University. entrance) along Bonham Road, Caine Road, Lower Albert Road Garden Road, Queen's Road Central, Queen's Road West and then back to the starting point. This route. meant encircling a part of the mid levels and the centre and western parts of the city, but not clashing with the tram lines. In the petition it was mentioned that the buses could seat 16 first class passengers and 20 second class, the respective fares being 10 cents and 5 cents. There would be twenty permanent stops along the route.

However, as stated, permission was refused. According to one report, the applicant was informed that the Government did not see fit to permit any further bus services the city of Victoria.
