THE BIRTHPLACE OF
GOETHE
IN THE “OL/TER
When the world-famous banking houses of Frankfort-on- "the-Main and its tremendous wealth and commercial importance are a legend of the past the people of the future shall yet reverence the very earth where its houses stood because it was the birthplace of Goethe. Other poets have written of men's Wanderings and their passions, their feuds and wars, their temptations and their triumphs, have even taxed their imagina tion to write of heaven and of hell, but not one has written as Goethe wrote of the evolution of the soul of man, Not one has taught us as he did to see the light upon the distant mountain Lops and climb ever towards it, however wild and rough the path; to reck nothing of bleeding hands and wounded feet if only we may climb ever upward.

Healing Springs. Frankfort is surrounded by famous "curea." The country of the Taunus hills is noted for its medicinal hot springs. Some of the world-frequented

Frankfort gets the benefit of the hundreds of thousands who go to these resorts from every country in the world, An hour's ride in a fine express train is no hardship and many thousands go, by automobiles. The drives among the mountains here are very attractive. Then in Germany there are always round-trip tickets which take in the most beautiful places in the neighbour- hood and are absurdly cheup. The record, third and even the fourth class cars are clean and comfortable..
The Roemer, Or Town Hall. Frankfort's Roemer, as we must write the word, since newspapers in America have not the umlaut in their type, was the place where all emperors of Germany, of greater Germany, in-
cluding Austria and much of Europe. in the far days, were elected Emperor of Rome and of Europe from the Atlantic to Turkey, some of these ancient warriors were: Who of our modern Agure-heads that are called kings could wear that golden crown which weighed over fourteen modern rounds? Who among our men could. wear the armour that appels us as we sor it in museums, so cumbersome and tremendous is its weight, and fight it as those men did? Emperors were chosen in the great hall of the Roemer, men who could lead the army in battle win out over their enemies and rule wisely. For many centuries all these emperors were given the crown of Charlemagne, his golden mace,, and his great sword, and one of their tribute fords rode on horseback to the whole ox roasting in the market place and with his award carved the first slive for the newly chosen emporer. Prohibiting Tea Is Not Unlikely.
[By RENE BACHE]
It is felt by all the best-qualified and most earnest reformers that the evil of stimulants has not been satisfactorily eliminated by the prohibition of
alcoholic beverages.
There is tobacco, a noxious weed. | A fresh amendment of the Constitution should make its sale n crime, An ounce of it in a person's pocket should con- stitute unlawful pongcasion, punishable by fine or imprisonment.
Coffee, likewine, must go. It is a powerful stimulant, owing that quality to an alkaloid called "caffeine," which is a species of dope. In coffee beans” ordinarily there is about 1 per cent. of caffeine.

Perl Of The Cigaretier But stay! Shall the vigarette evil be permitted to continue? Not if the Anti-Cigarette League can prevent. That League is already a formidable organization, and its aim is to influence and control legislation. As it frankly says, the abolishment of cigarettes is merely to be an entering wedge; its maib and ultimate object is to prohibit the use of tobacco.
People used to make fun of the Anti- Saloon League; they don't do so any longer. Experience has proved that a well-organized and determined minority can put through any sort of legislation it desires. Already the Anti-Cigarette League has obtained legislation which makes the sale of cigarettes unlawful in two states, Kansan and Utah.

Nicotheless Tobacco.
Tobneco is a nerve-soother. Undent- ably, when used to excess, it may irritate the nerves, and oven caso 'chronic nervous troubles. It may inter- fere with the action of the heart- "tobacco heart is a complaint not unfamiliar and, more particularly, in cases where the sufferor has the habit of inhaling algarette smoke, It may oven affect the sight.
But why not nicotineless tobacco? The Government Plant Bureau has come pretty near to producing t already By breeding processes it has obinined varieties, that contain almost nonicotine. It is nicotine that is the objectionable element in tobacco-the nikaloid, peculiar to that plant, which gives to it its stimulating_power. The experts of the Plant Bureau have brought down the percentage to a mere trace, and to reduce it to none at all will not be dificult. The tobacco habit is one of the hardest to cure, but to get vid of it would be rendered much casler if the addict could still be permitted to smoke.
Nicotine A Habit-Former. Nicotine in a colourless liquid, when separated out in a pure state. It looks like water In a strong cigar there. may be as much as 8 per cent. of it; in a mild sigor 2 per cent, or possibly loss. Cigarette tobacco usually contains leas than 2 per cent.
It is a hab-forming drug as evi denced by the great difficulty experl- enced by tobup-users in getting “rid" of the tobacco abit. For the average. man it is much easier to relinquish whisky than to quit tobacco,
The nicotine in tobacco corresponds to the alcohol in whisky and the caffeinin in coffee it in the stimulant. In parsons unaccustomed to it, it has the effect of contracting the blood-vessels that sur round the heart, thereby producing an effect of nausen and a deathlike faint- noss. It is in this way that a small boy auffers who tries his first pipe or elgar. The notion that a tobacco is streng in: proportion to the percentage of nicotine it contains is a mistake. Some very strong tobaccca are relatively poor in nicotine, their so-called strength con sisting in an excess of tarry oil,
