Good Friday Appeal. That worshippers should meet there that Good Friday not only as spectators but as those who were trying to take some share in the sufferings of Our Lord was the appeal made by the Rev. T. B. | Powell, M.A., at the morning's
service at St. John's Cathedral.
After reading the story of the Fassion, Mr. Powell said that even if the story were about one who was merely a man it would compel admiration and call for respect. But the one who hung on the Cross was not only a true mán. He was the brightness of the Father's Glory, the express image of His Passion, God of God, very God of Very, God.
We were not to think for a moment that the Cross was finished with and ended. It stood there perpetually to remind us of God's love and what effect our sins had on Him. And just as He died through- sin and ignor- ance he asked us at this time to die to our sins, to crucify our lower nature that out of it we might rise to the higher life.
It was surely a thing of in- portance for us to remember that it was a soldier who served Christ as He hung in agony, it was a soldier who when Our Lord cried out "I thirst" procured for him something to case his terrible! pain. Wherever the Gospel was preached this kindly simple act of un unknown soldier would stand as a monument of Chris- tian service.

Holy Day!
"The Way of the Cross was the feature of most services at the Catholic Cathedral and churches. "The Way of the Cross" followed the tenebræ in the afternoon at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and was the main feature of the day's devotion at St. Joseph's Church, Garden Road, and the Rosary Church, Kowloon.
To-day is Holy Day and the ceremony of the Blessing of the Paschal Candle and of the Font was conducted at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception between the hours of 6 ani and 9.30. High Mass was conducted at 8 a.m...

Union Church Sermon. The new interpretation of life that Jesus Christ had given was the theme of the address at Union Church, Kennedy Road on Good Friday. Taking as his text, "Ye need not weep for me," the Rev. E. K. Higdeon, M.A., who is act- ing for the Rev. J. Kirk Maconachie, emphasised that though the day was the anniver- į sary of the death of Jesus they had not met to pronounce & Cathedral Holy Communion will funeral oration. EXPERT, CARD SHARFERS,
Four well known "crooks" have come over to Hongkong from Macao, says, the "China News," a local vernacular paper; These are expert card sharpers..
The vernacular papar says that they have taken up residence in
vants and commissariat servants for the knights of the hills mak ing the latter more or less depeni. dent on their goodwill in return for indulgence.
In more recent years, the Mer chants' Volunteer Corps in the towns and the Village Volunteers in the more out-of-the-way places have been organised and maintain- ed by the civil population, and have rendered useful service but piracy is still rampant.
STAR'S NEW DRAW. FLORODORA COMPANY

TO-NIGHT.
Quite one of the brightest little shows that has yet came to Kow- loon is the Florodora Company which begins a brief season in the Star Theatre this evening. Com- posed of Spanish, and Filipino artistes, the Comparty more than helds its own in the excellence of the performance it presents. The programme consists chiefly of vocal and dancing items-the former including pieces from grand opera, musical comedy and vaudeville; the latter some skilful toe work and several pretty ballet effects. The artistes are all young and comely, and altogether it can safely be said that the entertain- ment they submit is one that is sure to give the greatest pleasure. Further variety is added to the evening's programme by an excel-: lent photoplay called "Lovers' Iane," a product of the famous Warner Brothers Studio.
