EXPERIENCES.

“SUI AN” ATTACK ECHO. Tales Captain Birss Can Tell At Home.

Pirato attacks and typhoons are among the experiences that have fallen to the lot of Capt. R. A. Birss who retires next week after 23 years' service with the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company.

Captain Birss has only return- ed Home twice during his 23 years out here. and since the last occasion he has had experiences decidedly more exciting than pleasant.

Capt. Andrew Birss,

He still bears the marks of the attack made upon him whilst he was going to the assistance of the Second Officer during the pirate attack on the Sui An in 1922.

During the typhoon of August 1923 he saw much of the havor I wrought, although he managed to hang out by lying at anchor behind Stonecutters.

Captain Birss is one of the old sailing ship men and proud of it too, as a "China Mail" reporter! found who interviewed him in his i snug little cabin on board the very boat which was the scene of the exciting operations in November, 1922.

"It was on the barque Kergord that he served his apprenticeship. the run being to Montevideo for the purpose of carrying home extract of meat and hides.

the

The four-masted ship. Golden Horn, was the scene of his next labours and on this he did several times the trip to' Melbourne with dressed timber, the route home being by way of Saigon where rice was taken aboard.

After further service on another Liverpool boat, the Cresington, also with the Firth Line of Glasgow, in the course of which he got pretty well acquaint- ed with Australia and the West coast of Chile, Capt. Birss became engaged in steamer trade with the East Indies and it was shortly! after he gave this up that he came out to the Far East.

Capt. Biras belongs to a well- known and respected seafaring family, his father, Capt. Andrew Biras, being long connected with Montrose shipping. His brothers' also turned to navigation. The younger of them was lost whilst captaining the Pilot salvage boat engaged in the successful refloat- ing of a vessel which had been. ashore on the Guatemala coast for ten years.

Hankow which was 'eventually burnt out alongside the wharf, as the master of the Kinshan, took over the Lintam (now the Chin On) new from the Dock Com- pany, and captained the Takhing, the Sui An, the Kinshan, the Taishan, and finally the Sub An again.
