OUR TRADE ROUTES:
BRITISH NAVY'S BIG. TASK. ESTIMATES INCREASED £5,000,000. Hongkong and the Singapore Base.
Hongkong's £250,000 gift was again mentioned in the House of Commons yesterday when the Navy Estimates were introduced.
£5,000,000 INCREASE.
(Reuter's Service.)
London, March 19.
In the House of Commons, the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. W. C. Bridgeman, introducing the Nayy Estimates, explained that the increase of nearly £5,000,000 was due partly to the fact that the Estimates were excessively cut down by the Labour Cabinet with the result that leeway.had to be made up...
All our obligations under the Washington Treaty had been ear ried out in advance of the time limit but not without difficulty.
No large scale
maneuvres beyond the ordinary fleet exer- cises were being held.
It was nonsense to say, OUT action was provocative. We had no lust of conquest or desire for more territory:
All we wanted was to develop our territories trade. The glamour and glory of arms did not attract us. We had seen too much misary accompanying it,
The world knew we wanted peace and would not think better of us for making a gesture which would weaken our position.
