At the beginning of the week ended January 17, there was water on various parts of the Hurst Park racecourse to a depth of 3ft, and M. A. H. Pollard, the secretard then thought that racing would be Impossible. But the course was in exceptionally good condition, con sidering the circumstances, when the two days' meeting opened on January 14. Nothing more entertaining to the enthusiastic supporter of National Hunt sport could have been desired than the race, for the January Steeplechase. There were only four competitors that was the one disappointing feature and with Wee Laddie coming to grief through being baulked at the first obstacle there

a most interesting tussle between Beggar's End, Maxto and Head Master.
