MR. JOHN PEEL'S LOCAL OPTION WINS THE DERBY.
TO-DAY'S GREAT RACE.
POPULAR VICTORY FOR JOHN PEEL STABLE.
THRILLING FINISH.
Full Results of the Day's Events.
A "popular victory! Local Option, after a game struggle, won the Derby in almost-record time, after one of the most thrilling finishes seen here-
In striking contrast to last year, almost ideal weather graced Derby Day at the annual races this marning.
Ladies showed their appre ciation by coming out in their best, their pretty dresses, making pleasing foreground to the stands gally decorated with-bunting.
Sir Paul Chater who had, for him, the most unusual experience yesterday of not leading in a winner.'
a
Long before the event was run just on one o'clock, the stands both members' and public en closures were full of eager spectators, who had assembled to see the epic struggle for the Blac Rinband of the local turf.
Of course the Perby dominated the day's racing. Interest was not confined to the course as there were many who were interested in the sweeps drawn last night,
Mr. "Relyon," the popular owner of Uncle Dick, was doubly fortunate yesterday. Not only did his pay win the Valley. Stakes but he also drew it in the cash sweep!
With the sun shining the course was on the hard side, Fast times and few upsets of form were anticipated.
After yesterday's running, Local Option was more firmly entrenched as first favourite for the Derby.
H. E. the Governor (Sir Edward Stubbs) arrived before the start of the first rage to see his pony, Gaudje, run second after a good finish...
