"LEAGUE OF NATIONS'

EFFORTS."

The League of Athletic Nations is developing through the endeavours of the Americas Amateur Athletic

Union.

Two national sprinting cham pions. C. W. Paddock of California, and Loren Murchison of New Jersey, are the emissaries who will carry America's invitation to for eign lands this year, with exhibi-

tions in Hawaii, New Zealand. Australia, Japan, Germany and Sweden and perhaps elsewhere, a step described by Murray Hulbert, president of the A.AU., as a true linking of the peoples.

Meanwhile, leading athletes of the United States are preparing to jump the Panama Canal in renewed effort to link the Americas. Within two years the A. A. Us special committee for cementing athletic ties with South America hopes to have the best of the two continents meeting in competition. Mexico has proved a safe ground for American advance, at least in the field of sport. Basketball, boxing, and even baseball, as developed in the United States. have found root in the little re- public, with the capital the centre of activities. The Mexico City Y.M.C.A. has

.a native basketball team on a tour that ene compassed New England, and the International YMCA: College of Springfield, Mass., is sending ane of the best teams of gymnasts in the United States to the Mexican capital this winter.

Manager J. J. McGaw of the New York Giants promises to carry professional baseball into the heart of South America after

the pennant races next season and he again will attempt the conver sion of Europe. But the invasion of South America at this time ap- pears to be the most interesting professional step in the upbuilding of friendly relations.

W. R Coe., who has spent probably a million dollars since he entered the turf a few years ago and now has a score of horses in training at Belmont Park, has no George jockey for this season.

D. Widener is another, who has an extensive string of horses at Belmont Fark but no fider for them. Mrs. Victor Vivaudou, who has the remnants of the stable her husband' raced for years, also is hunting for a good "boy. J. F. Widener and James Butler are others" without jockeys for next season.

Already the leading nations of the world are linked by pony polo and lawn tennis, and to some ex- tent by soccer, football and hockey, but the effort of the A. A. U appears to be the first organized attempt to bring South America into a definite league of sport nations. The campaign will open with amateur boxing champion- ships which will be settled in North America this year. The J. Meinere following season will find the United States representatives clashing on foreign soil. Later

Paavo Nurmi, the Finnish athlete, has a personality all his own, as distinctive as his running style.
