Mr. H. A. Taylor, Assistant Superintendent of Imports and Exports, conducted the prosecu- tion, and Mr. E. W. Whitehouse reduced defended.

The seizure' was made by Revenue Officer Lanigan at the Kowloon godowns on February 6. On examining part of seven cases described is gelatine, a packet of morphine was found in the third case opened. A watch was kept for the importer, and he arrived during the course of the day with the bill of lading. He was de- tained and later arrested. On further examination of the cases, 111 packets of morphine were found hidden under layers. of gelatine.

As regards the Arst charge, Mr. Whitehouse submitted that the prosecution had failed to prove their case. His client only produced a bill of lading at the godown, expecting to receive goods that were already in the Colony. There had been importation.

SIR HARRY LAUDER.

ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS IN HONGKONG.

H

It has been written of Sir Harry Lauder that "when he comes upon the stage and sings in that easy, effortless way of his, fragrance enters with him, the murky airs of the place vanish, and a breath of the windy mountain-side is abroad. You can almost scent the heather. on the hills."

If a concensus of opinion were takea of the Theatre Royal audience last night, which was as large and enthusiastic a house"

as the great entertainer has yet had, it would be found to be in entire agreement with this apt summing up of his wonderful magnetic" powers. The choruses were, taken up in the intervals; and as a result of this, and that indefinable transmission by which an artiste is able to sense when, he has his audience with him, Sir Harry was in great form and delighted every one by his humour, which is as clean as his wit is Dimble.
