THE DRIVER EXONERATED:

INQUIRY ADJOURNED.

Mr. J. R. Wodi, assisted by a jury consisting of Messrs. F. J Tavares, J. F. Tavares and Mr. W. Taylor, held an enquiry yesterday into the death of a Chinese aged 60 years, who was killed by a trumear-in Des Vaux Rond Central on December 22.

The doctor who made the post morten examination was absent owing to indisposition, and a witness who was on the tramear at the time had also left the Colony. The jury were asked to give their views after hearing the evidence, and the enquiry would be adjourned sine die.

A nephew of the deceased testi- fied to the latter's eyesight being good, and that he was not deaf.

The driver of the tramcar gave evidence as to the accident, after which, the jury were of the opinion That no blame could be attached to

On board the cruiser there were, altogether, 13 med, including Captain Ferries, of Aberdeen, who was in command. The rather serious plight in which they found themselves is vividly described by the captain in his story of their wanderings.

"We left Rosyth," he said, for Belfast, on February 26, in the tow of the two tugs. On the morning of our third day out, during heavy weather in the Moray Firth, the tugs parted from us. They stood by, however, during that day" and the following snow squalls night, but severe came on, and they were compelled to run for port.

"We were left quite helpless, as we had no engines on board, and so we drifted about until Saturday, March 1, when we let the anchors down."

Estimating that they had been drifting for some distance, Captain Ferries reckoned their position as some 65 miles of Aberdeen. There they layeast of Abe the

fathoms of water, out, however, of the usual trade routes. This latter fact was borne in upon them by the fact that for several days during their stay there they did not observe a single vessel.
