When these two met on November 15, it will be remembered Cartlidge won un points after a bout chiefly noted for the number of times the referee issued the warning "break." The excuse, was made that Smith was leaning on Cartlidge most of the time and that there was actually little holding. In the opinion of many ex- perienced boxing men such a statement is a mere quibble. However, it has been repeatedly drummed into me during the past few days that on Tuesday next we shall see quite a different Matty Smith-if so the question can be definitely settled as to which of the two is the more inclined to hold or lean.. Smith, I am told, is going to make short work of Jim Cartlidge this time. I do not believe it. I am of the belief that Smith was as fit as he wished to be on last Occasion and that Cartlidge won with a lot to spare. I expect him. to prove himself the better man_to-morrow.
Those how boosting Matty Smith seem to lose sight of the fact that their remarks are scarcely in the nature of a compliment either to Smith or to his trainer. Above all they are an attempt to cheapen the victory of Cartlidge. Both men have fine records to their credit. and if only there is less holding, we should be treated to a good lively bout..
The Association, however; has arranged quite an attractive programme apart. from the main event and, as prices for ringside, seats have Bech reduced a crowded house should be assured.
