The following is a summary of the speech delivered by Mr. Takeshi-Shirani, President of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, at the shareholders' semi-annual general
at meeting held Tokyo November 28:--
The President, says the "Japan Chronicle in recommending the adoption of the report, said that the net profit for the term under review amounted to Y.1,900,000, showing an increase of Y.300,000 over that of the previous, term, and Y.800,000 over that of the corresponding term last year. Unfortunately, however, this increase was by no means indica- tive of any sign of improvement in the shipping trade, such increase being, in a great mea- sure, due to the depreciation of the yen exchange, and the tem- porary inflation of passenger traffic for the Pacific Coast of America, pending the operation of the new immigration law of the United States. The actual condition of the continued ship ping depression might be gauged by the fact that, in spite of the increase of net profit, the tonnage of cargo and the number of passengers actually handled. during the term were both, about ten per cent below the figures of the previous term.
In order to enable the Direc- tors to recommend a dividend of ten per cent., the President said, they had to propose a further in- cursion on the dividend, equalisa- tion fund to the extent of Y.1,250,000.
