Foochow capital of Fukien pro- vince, is one of the busy conmer- clal ports in South China, It is situated on the Min River, having an extensive hinterland to serve. The chief exports of the port are tea, timber, lacquer ware, 'paper ambrellas and bamboo shoots, while the imports are flour, rice, sugar, cloth, kerosene oil, and metal-ware." Owing to the moun- tainous nature of the province, traffic between Foochow and the hinterland is done chiefly by junks and sampans on the mountain streams. Large scale business is generally transacted through a broker or commission agent. Goods in the hinterland for export are generally moved to Foochow by the producer, who sells them to the exporter through commission agent, says the Chinese" Economic Bulletin of Peking.
Exporters of Fukien goods are not always foreign firms, there being quite a number of Chiness merchants from other coastal provinces, because a large percept. age of Fukien goods are consumed | in other provinces of China. The
