SUICIDE ON HOLIDAY.

INQUEST STORY ON MALAY CIVIL SERVANT.

A breakdown in health while engaged as a civil servant in the Maloy States was revealed at the inquest at Christchurch on Joseph Alfred Barrett (28), of Glentworth Road, Clifton Woods, Bristol, whose decapitated body was found on the railway. His motor-car was found abandoned at Raeshot Hill, close to the railway. The Rev. R. O, Barrett, of Bristol, his brother, said that the dead man returned from the Malay States ten months ago physically run down and mentally depressed. He left home a few days before to spend a holiday at Bournemouth,

The night porter of a Boscombe hotel said that Barrett arrived at the hotel presenting a ruffled ap- pearance. His strange manner caused the porter to, visit Barrett's bedroom, but he then appeared to be quiet.

It is understood that Alexander Mackenzie is writing his reminiscences. Despite his

age, the veteran Scottish musician has enormous powers of work, and since his recent retirement from the post of Principal of the Royal Academy of Music relieved him of official duties, he has been filing up his time in a fashion that should give pleasure to many people. For Sir Alexander, from his early days in Scotland and in Germany the 'sixties, has always been in touch with interesting personalities in the musical world. Also, he is a humorist.

About the same year Mrs. Isabella Romer published her travels in the Rhone district, and in this book she remarked, "The beggara in the streets have paper cigars called cigarettes in their mouths." The probability is that the date of the introduction of the cigarette Into England could be carried farther back than Mr Fortescue's date, and the Grimean War is a more likely period.

He has had some very bad luck; such as a serious illness, during which those responsible for his affairs, when the doctors had cut him off from business, made a safety" decision which lost him a lot of money. Then he put up a very expensive musical play, with Delysia as the star; after a week or two Delysia had, through illness, to surrender her part, and the public interest collapsed. Heather Day at.R.SC.

Heather Day, always an interest- ing annual event at Crane Court, the headquarters of the Royal Scottish Corporation, was remark- able for the large number of pen. stoners who attended. Over 200, some of whom travelled many miles to be present, took occa sion to renew old associations. They gathered in the large hall of the Corporation, where a service was conducted by the Rev. James Fergusson, parish minister of Corstorphine. After the service the pensioners were served with re- freshments by a band of willing helpers under the able. leadership of the secretary, Mr. T. R. Moncrieff. Each guest was presented with a bunch of heather, which had been gathered in the Highlands and thoughtfully sent by the 'Duchess of Atholl, Lady Francis Balfour, Lady Her mione Cameron, and several other friends of the pensioners." " Honour for Mr. Findlay,

The members of the Savage Club paid merited compliment to a po pular member when they gathered bid farewell in force at luncheon to Mr. J. T. Findlay, the chairman and editor of the "Shipping World." Mr. Findlay, who is a native of Peterhead, is returning to live in Aberdeenshire. He is not, however, giving up entirely his con- nection with the publication with which he has been 'so honourably connected for so many years. He is retaining his controlling in- terest in it. This will necessitate..} several journeys a year to London, and the members of the Club will have the pleasure of seeing him, on these occasions. Mr. Bert Thomas, the cartoonist, contributed to the humours of the afternoon, for he had drawn on the menú a picture of Mr. Findlay taking leave of a London policeman, who asked ~~~ "Will ye no come back again 7" Mr. Findlay's knowledge of ship- ping affairs is very extensive, and his opinions were valued because they were always given with scrupulous fairness.
