Stolls and Gaumonts are now the only British, producing firms with a regular output, though good individual work is being done by Mr. Graham Wilcox (Decameron Nights), Mr. Archibald Nettlefold | (Human Desires) and one or two others.
Mr. Ceci Hepworth, who is among those who have recently gone out of film. production (after | making a closing hit with "Comin' Through the Rye, ") prophesies that the best films of the future will come from Germany, not from America.
"I have just come back from Germany," he said, "and am more convinced than eter that the German films are going to be the best in the world, if they are not that already. Germany has got what America basn't an artistic tradition. It also has a Govern- ment and a banking system that realise the importance of the cinema as a means of national. expression and international. In fluence.
"As for this country, it has simply been squeezed out."
Mr. Frank Tley, editor of the "Kinematograph Weekly," gave it as his opinion that the only hope for British producers is to con- centrate on a small number of high-class pictures aiming at the world market.
"We can't hope to compete successfully with America in the cheaper stuff," he said. The American producer can get all his money back, and a bit over, in his own country, and then sell for next to nothing to the rest of the world. The result is that over 85 per cent. of pictures shown here, and over 80 per cent. shown throughout the world, are American; "In meeting this competition, our British producing firms have shown themselves insular and in- "efficient. They have concentrated on making pictures for the home market, and as the home market is small, they have starved their producers.
Mismanagement on a colossal scale has been common. One firm lost a quarter of a million | sterling, and only turned out two
pictures!
