THE ATTFIELD CASE.
FATHER RELEASED FROM JAIL.
GUN-RUNNING CHARGES WITHDRAWN.
SON REFUSED BAIL.
(Reuter's Service.)
LONDON, September 19. Mr. Attfield senior has been released from Brixton Jall, where he has been imprisoned since July 24, as he was unable to furnish £10,000 bail, fixed in each case by the Judge in Chambers after the gun-running charges had bean withdrawn in the Police Court and he and his son had been re- arrested on behalf of the customs authorities.
Yesterday, ball was reduced to £2,000 in the case of Mr. Attfied senior, but the application of his son (Captain Cecil Attfield) for ball was refused.
GUN-RUNNING ALLEGED.
A message of July 25 read: Captain Cecil Attfield and his father were charged at the Mansion House with attempted gun-running between the 8th of April and the 2nd of July from the Thames to Russia. They were remanded, bail being refused.
Counsel for the Commissioners of Customs said that the charge was made under the Armas Export Prohibition Order of 1921. The articles concerned in this case were machine gun parts and mountings. A further charge is probable. Counsel for the defence when refused bail, said that the penalty under this charge was only £100 fine. Mr. Attfield senior repudiated his liability. He had been headmaster of a London school for forty years. Captain Attfield voluntarily made a state- ment at Scotland Yard some time ago and had heard nothing of the affair since. He was amazed to see in the papers that a warrant for his arrest had been issued.

STOCKINETTE LINGERIE.
HOW TO TREAT IT.
Stockinette is, perhaps, the most popular material for underwear at the present moment. It is so light, both cool to wear and a protection from chills, and extremely easy to wash at home.
An extraordinary general meet- ing of the Hongkong Book Club, was held yesterday evening to receive the resignation of the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer (Mr. Charles Gerken) Dr. W. W. Pearse, who presided, moved the resignation be accepted, and that Mr. Gerken be thanked for his past services to the Club. The resolu

The "China Mail" was courte ously informed this morning, by one of the officials concerned, that the reliability trials for the Harley Davidson Cup will commence this afternoon. This is being organis ed by the motor cycle section of the Hongkong Automobile Association and will be in the New Territories. For the benefit of members on the Hongkong side of the water it is announced that the motor-ear lighter will leave Hongkong at 1.30 p.m. and will return from Kowloon at 7 p.m..
To-day's event will be the first half of the trial. The starts will be made from the Kowloon Fire Station from 2 p.m. at intervals of a minute between competitors, he thought desirable. and there will be the first check, an open one, eight and a half miles from the start. Between this point and Castle Peak two secret checks will be made and there will be another secret check on the journey home. Competi- tors are to keep a speed of 20 miles an hour and are due back at the starting point by 645 p.m.

The Chief difficulty experienced by the home worker is in the Cutting out. Stockinette is terrible stuff for stretching. The simplest plan is to run a tacking close to the line of cutting out before com- mencing to do so, and not to remove the stitches until the seams are done.

London, Aug.. 23. Mr. Pussyfoot" Johnson, the apostle proibition, was heckled when he spoke to a large audience at the Kingsway Hall, W.C.

While he was telling of the pro- gress of probibition in the United Stutes there was considerable inter- ruption, and a man attempted to put questions, to him.
Through its stretching pro clivities stockinette often "drops" with wear, and slips and petticoats are sometimes found to
have become inches longer, and the hems need taking up.
