"Focanneanu was excited. offered to give him 5s, all the money. I had with me. 'I want money, more money,” he said, and added, 'If I don't get it to-day I will finish myself.
"Then his fingers went to a leather case he was carrying, which I thought held papers. He made as if to open the case, and it flashed into my mind that there was a revolver in the case.
"I jumped at him, but as I pinioned his arms he had a re- volver in one hand and was point- ing it at his own heal. Despite my efforts, he broke, away from me, and almost instantly fired two shots, and, as a servant rushed into the room, I, now sheltering behind a chair, could see his finger nervously twitching near the trig- ger. He failed, however, to fire any more shot, and was easily dis- .armed."
M. Beza said that the man, who: was well dressed in a blue suit, haa maile seven or eight calls at the Legation in the course of the last few months. On each occasion he said he needed money.
"Altogether I had given him £40," said M. Beza. "On April 4 gave him his fare to Paris, so that from there, with the further aid of the Rumanian Legation, he. could go back to Rumania.
"On one of his visits here he told me that he expected to get mar ried, when he would probably be well off:- He had a Rumanian pass- port and had been in England year. His address he gave us the Students' Union of Liverpool Uni- versity."
