LORD DARLING.

BACK ON BENCH.

London, July 9:-Lord Darling, formerly Mr. Justice Darling, yesterday again occupied his old. seat on the bench of Court IV. at the Law Courts, which he vacated last year on retiring after 26 years' service as a judge.

Having returned to assist in wiping off the arrears of work in. the courts, he' sat with Mr. Justice Shearman as a Divisional Court for hearing appeals in county court

cases

Mr. J. D. Casswell, applying for the postponement of one case, said it was a rent restriction case.

Lord Darling (wearily) Rent restriction. I shall be glad to put it off until I have gone from here again. (Laughter.)

Giving judgment in another rent restriction' case Lord Darling said the Legislatore seemed to have determined to get rid of t'ese restrictions one at a time be cause it would be too great. al shock to the public for them to find that they had been suddenly re- stored to the liberties, of their ancestors. (Laughter.)

Alluding to his colleague on the -bench as my brother Shearman," Lord Darling added reflectively, I am not quite sure whether he is

my brother now. I will therefore

call him Mr. Justice Shearmanız.”

"I will still call him my brother,"

declared Mr. Justice Shearman, when alluding to Lord Darling at a later stage of the proceedings-
