COLEL'S

1924.

BURGLARY AT TAIKOO.

L'S FINAL ADDRESS, MR. O'BRIEN LOSES $600 AND

GOLD WATCH,"

JUDGMENT RESERVED.

--

-final address of Mr. Eldon Per K. C. at the Supreme Court, th morning, dealt mainly with tipoint at Issue as to when the sps passed.

The action för damages is brought by the La ling Steamship Co. Ltd. (the owners of the S.S. "Apocy") against the Indo-China Steam Navigation Company (the ower of the s.s. "Tal Sang") in respect of a river collision. There were differences of opinion among the witnesses as to whether the ships lud passed before the collision occurred. The plaintiff's had claimed that the ship had not passed and the the "Tat Sang" was drawing clear when the collision occurred, The defence is that the "Apoey" had been left behind a mile, had increased' speed and had almost drawn level.

who

A burglar, who entered the residence of Mr. D,Brien at No. 3, Taikoo Terrace last night broke open a drawer in the dining room and escaped with money and jewellery valued at $650.

In his report to the Police. Mr. O'Brien states the thief gained entrance to the dining room he- tween ten and eleven o'clock. He broke open a drawer in a chest of drawers and extracted five $100 notes and a gold wristlet watch. The watch was a present made to Mr O'Brien, by members "of the Talkoo Sugar Refinery 'Company and is valued at $150.

ARMED ROBBERY.

HOUSE BOY ADMITS LAW-

LESS RAIDERS.

MA Potter, said that he did not see how this contention could be substantiated in view of the fact that the "Tal Sang" was the faster ship by a knot an hour.

In answer to the tinkle of the There would have been no use dear bell at No. 4 Mortison Till in the Apocy trying to catch her up and as a matter Gap Rond, a house boy nwitting of fact the Apoey was going admitted four men who sa full, steam ahead all the time The log figures of the "Tai Sang" were evidence in support of the plaintiffs contention and either they or the evidence of the captain (Capt. Grant) were wrong.

The main contention of plaintiff's had been admitted all along that the "Tai Sang" suddenly went

across the course " of ship behind her in such a way that the only possible chance for

what, for the purpose of the angument, he would call "overtaking" ship, to avoid the collision was by running herself on "the bank.

Mr. Alabaster had claimed that the Captain of the "Tal Sang" was exempted from the responsi- ilities of his action on the "Agony of the Moment" plea, but there was not judgntent to support his claim. The plea could not be used to exemplify the manoeuvres of the "Tai Sang" on a perfectly clear day with a ship 400 yards

behind.

Mr. Potter's address" concluded the hearing and "judgment" was reserved.

WUCHOW STEAMERS

HERE.

RATE WAR ON FLOODS?

More than half a dozen small river steamers were laid up in Shenipo Bay during the week

These comprised everal ende. well-known vessels on the Hong- kong-Wuchow run and one or two on the Canton-Wuchow run.

From inquiries made in the river] slupping trade it appears as though the temporary idleness is due to: several reasons. In one quarterit was stated that hitherto there was a "pool" of nineteen Wuchow steuners which had a fixed turid" for both passengers and steamers.. It was alleged that some of the boats had been undercutting rates or giving rebates and this bad; brought about dissatisfaction.

Another, gentlenian interested in. the Wachows trade attributes the tying-up to the present flood the West River. The stuber boats, he said, were hard put to negotiate certain parts of the river und their journey accordingly occupied longer nie, bouts, it was alleged, could not pay their way on the old schedule and i therefore, took advantage of things I to have their annual docking and overhaul..

Thess

Last night, the "Kwong Ying" which was in the bay on Saturday, left for Wachow and West River ports.

It is interesting to note Hongkong is to a large extent dependent on Wuchow for supplies of poultry, cattle and firewood.

METER READERS.

UNIFORM NOT THOUGHT NECESSARY.

"Our meter readers have worked without uniforms since 1864 and we have had no trouble to speak of," said Mr. L, J. Blackburn, manager of the Hongkong and China Gas Co., Ltd, when rip-| proached by a China Mail ion this morning, regarding the dismus- sion that has arisen in connection with the identifying of local meter- readors.

However, Mr. Blackborn nasuted. us that bo was giving the matter his attention and would come to a decision in a few days. The meter-renders themselves were not in favour of uniformis.

In the course of the conversation, it was explained that the men take with them a book in, which the readings, are recorded and from which slips are torn so as to advise, the customer in question. More over, each man is provided with an identity card which Mr. Black burn thought was the most affect tive form of identification..

It was also gathered that the employees who take the readings at house meters are only engaged in that work for a few days in each bmouth During the rest of the

tina they work in the office.
