HOTEL AUSTRALIA SHOW CASE BROKEN OPEN.

NEARLY £1,300 TAKEN.

One of the most daring Austra.i lian robberies reported to the police for years was perpetrated at the Hotel Australia when a show- case belonging to Proud's, Ltd., on the first fluor, whs broken open, and twenty-five articles of diamond jewellery, valued at nearly £1,300, were stolen.

When the robbery' was discover- ed at 420 by Edward Mocknell, | night watchman, he informed Mr. Kenney, assistant manager, who was asleep on the premises. Word of the robbery was sent at orice to Police Headquarters, and in a short. time Detective-Sergeants Robson and Surridge, and Detectives Wickham and S. Thompson, with Detective Grant (fingerprint ex pert), were quickly on the scene. Certain action was taken in regard to persons possibly entering or leaving the hotel,
