What is alleged here is that Green, in the course of his duty, having to keep observation on person suspected of committing an offence, found that the evidenco was not satisfactory,
We are all proud of the Metro politan Police Force. We can
Believing that the man was say that in 999 cases out of 1,000 guilty, Green strengthened his the word of a policeman can be evidence by saying that he had taken. "It would therefore be seen more than he had seen. That, dangerous in the public interest If. of course, is perjury, and perjury, it were thought for a moment that į of a dangerous character, any police officer could add to Mr. Travers Humphreys said a bis evidence in order that whot he

regard to a woman known' as
Mr. Travers Humphreys, at the Old Bailey, thus opened the case against Alfred Green, 44 a Sergeant. of the Metropolitan Police, who was charged with perjury
The prosecution was instituted by the Director of Public Pro- secutions (Sir Archibald Bodkin), who was present in court.
Mr. Humphreys said that the case was important to the sergeant because conviction must inevitably result in dismissal from the Force. |The alleged perjury was committed in a case in which Green and Police-constable Laven were the only two witnesses for the pro. secution. Laven was awaiting trial on a similar charge, as the law did not allow two people being charged together with perjury....
I am glad to say, counsel added, that this is not a case in which the prosecution' allege that Green invented the story for the purpose of convicting an innocent person. That is almost unthinkable of any member of the police force.

Peggy" was arrested on Septem-| her, 31 aud charged at Clerkenwell Police Cuirt Green, had pre- viously reported certain incidents which he could not have seen because Whealdon, on the dates mentioned, was with his ship ar the London docks.
Wheeldon satisfied the, magist- rate that he was in his ship, and the case was dismissed with 10- guineas costs against the police.
Counsel suggested that Sergeant Green, having missed Wheeldon for the three days, and thinking that this might be regarded as dis- creditable to him, reported that Wheeldon had been doing on those days what he had bean.doing on other days.
