TIBETAN
DRAMA.
PLAYS WICH LAST FOR THREE DAYS.
The Tibetan. Mystery Placs" is the title, o* i •W inok tana lated from the French H. 1. Weet and pusheher"-by-Messrs. Routledge. These are, it išbelieve | ed, the diess plays of the kind that have been tully rendered into Eng- ¦lish, end, it is remarkable that they should be edna tỗ us through the industry of a Frenchutan... The drama is the property of the monks, Sayunen agrasionally helping in the female ports, and this gives it its | seiniseligions and didactic charac- tor. There is no set stage and no scenery. The play- acted in the open air, in what the translator calis. si valosure, though it seems that the fence is composed of the cond and of the tents, or other shelter for notables. It consists of narrator end diakugou, the murrstog opening with a short revital of the previous history. rather, after the fashion of the opening mech in many of the extani Girek - tragedies. But his |part does not stop there. At inter- vals hotween the dialogues he comes Lon to enrry die netien, forward, or else this is done by the actors them selves. The actors frequently read their parts, and the play busfs for two or three days...
ACTORS LATITUDE..
We me, however, 16% de suppose that the, text before us represents the drama as played. The printed. book is, in fact, little more than a sketolon: for long periods are oc- cupied with the mute pantomime, "while the "actors, who specialize in particular parts, are by no means Thound-by the written wende bu, on" the contrary, use it with a great deal { of freedom, pitting in much of their
own, so that ezeh extor gives his. own individual version. It may bo remarked in paronthesis that this; freedom of tatment segms to bo peculiar to the Asiatic genius, for wo find it also in the highly developed Indian art of music. Europe. r.) gards the text as sacred; it is a erime te mes liberries with the text of Hamlet or with a Beethoven sym- phony Asin prefers to introduce the personality of the performers, i augarding the performance of the litem fost as tending to lifelessness. This freedom of treatment naturally increases the length of the play, which is further assisted by, being sung, often to the accompaniment of dances.
MOST POPULAR PLAYS,
The three plays here presented have been well chosen, slice they exhibis three distinct styles, though only the last can strictly be called a "mystery" play. The first and most popular is written round the Buddhist theme of the supreme vir- tue of charity. The Prince, who unable to resist any demand for alins, gives away a precious magic jewel! For this fault ho is banished tho Mount of the Demons, and on the! way he parts with all he can call his own-aven his children and his wife, The latter, however, is returned to. him, for the buggar turns out to be the god Indra, who wishes to test him. The second play is rather of the nature of a fairy tale, in which one is led to suspect the influence of Arabia, or at least of Western Asia, since we brought into the at- mosphere of fairios, genies, and sour ves that enable the wearer to fly. The third play is more characteristi cally Buddhist and is perbape of the three the most national. There is nothing in it that suggests outside: influence: The heroine in almost a religious manise. She is continually! dwelling on the yanity of human life and the supreme comfort of religion. and, having left, frat her husband's and then her father's home, retires to n monastery, and finally to the devent, where she is left in contem- pletion
Mr.
Mrs. Dealy writing to Tanner, Headmaster of Queen's | 20 College, says: "I regret to tell. mata pakkotempehusband died on March 1, and so will never have the pleasure of seeing his sonnets so nicely printed in the pretty Hitle volume Scales from the Dragon" which you en kindly sent him. Nevertheless I thank you very much for it, and shall always prizolát ks: a souvenir" of Queen's College.
