Al Jennings, reformed train robber, testified before a Senate investigating committee that the late Jake Hamon, Oklahoma oil magnate, told him that he (Hamon) paid $1,000,000 to swing the nomination, of the late President Harding. Jennings said Hamon added that the former Attorney- General, Mr. Daugherty, Will H. Hays, former Postmaster-General, but now Czar of the Movies, and the late Boise Penrose, Pennsylvania political leader, shared the money. At the point of his revolver President Alvaro Obregon, Mexico.'s one-armed soldier-president, captured General Jose Anaya, one of the leaders of the recent revolt, in Mexico City. Representative John W. Langley, Republican, Kentucky, has been indicted in Washington, charged with using his influence to get officials to connive at the illegal removal and transpor tution of whiskey. UNIVERSITY.
ENGINEERS' SOCIETY
DINNER.
Over a hundred members' and guests of the Hongkong University Engineering Society spent a good time at the annual dinner of the Society held in the Great Hall of the University on Saturday. Theré was no doubt that engineers were present for a feature of the decora- tions was a model of a lighthouse, which stood about twenty feet high "above the platform at the back of the Hall. This lighthouse was made from the wood of pack- | - ing cases, which had contained a new 50 h.p. oll engine, "recently presented to the University. A brilliant ray, focussed on the vice-Chairman (Mr. Khoo) came the lighthouse. Below were rocks, and a notice reading "Degree Rocks." This idea of the University as a lighthouse was also used on the very original menu

If pass without saying how much the this little Island at the mouth of Chinese people appreciated the the Canton River, by some great splendid generosity of the Taikoo catastrophe of nature such as an firms, for without their subscrip. earthquake should disappear and tions of over £50,000, there be submerged, never to be seen would certainly have been no Engineering Faculty, and probably
card.
The guests included the Han.no University. Mr. H. T. Creasy, Messrs. G. M. Young, R. M. Dyer, J. Reid, E. Marsh, K. E. Greig and others well-known in local engineering circles.
Mr. Foo Ping Sheung B. Sc., a 1916 H.K.D. Engineering graduate proposed" The University" and in reply, Professor Hinton referred to the position of the lighthouse upon the rocks. He suggested that the time had come when the metaphor should be changed, for the University might be compared to a coral island, which was form ed by the efforts of countless workers, who even left their bodies over their work, so that indeed the coral was built up of them..

Above all else would it be told that, as a crowning effort, there had been founded a Univer sity, a symbol of the highest type of any civilisation, for it stood for the fruition of all labour, the quest for yet mote knowledge. If the University Engineering Society could help in its efforts, in however small a manner, nothing better could be asked of it..
The President, Professor Mid- dieton Smith, replied, remarking that Mr. Reid, Mr. Dyer, Mr. Marsh, Mr. Greig and others pre- sent were the finished products, while the students were the raw material. The University was not like a modern motor car factory; they could not turn out all of the raw material into Rolls-Royces
