In his report upon the Fisheries of Malaya, Mr. D. G. Stead, Fishe- ries Enquiry Commissioner, says: This trade is entirely in the hands of the Chinese. The fins of the larger sharks are cel 14lected regularly at all the fishing centres and at many of the markets, especially as regards the fishing centres, where the remarkable type" of set-line known as Rawai are used. Rawai capture considerable numbers of sharks and rays. The edges of the pectoral flaps of the rays (Ikan Pari) are frequently to be found also amongst sharks' fins. Sharks fins are forwarded to Penang and Singapore, principally the latter, whence they are des- patched to many places. Penang receives its supplies mostly from Burma. A large quantity also comes from Sumatra, as well as from the coast of Kedah, Perak, Selangor, and The Dind- ings. A considerable percentage of the supplies received in Penang is sent on to Singapore. Singapore receives its supplies from a multitude of sources, and handles a really vast quantity-probably not less than 1,000,000 lb. weight per year. Much of this is used in Malaya, although largely forward- ed to China. According to the export returns for 1922, at least 319,000 lb. weight was forwarded to China. Most of the Chinese: kedai in Malaya stock sharks fins for use in Chinese cookery. I have frequently seen Chinese street cooks and others shredding CHINESE WALTZ these fas, and no doubt they assist
