CHURCH NOTES..
A HOLY WEEK ADDRESS.
PALM SUNDAY.
THE CHINA MAIL.
So called in commemoration of the triumphal entry of our Lord which (from St. John XII:1 and 12) was reckoned as corresponding to this day. Both in the Eust and West there grew upon this day the ceremony of "Blessing" and distributing the Palms and carrying them in procession with litanies and hymns. The ceremony was intended both as memoration and as a symbol of our taking up the badge of dis cipleship. The proper second lesson for evensong in the new Lectionary marks the commemor ation of the original happening as did the special lessons before the 1549 issue of the Prayer Book.

It is the time when we are called especially to examine our own minds and conduct in the light of Him Who made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant........and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. We are meant not merely to be spectators of the Passion, but rather to be sharers in it. Unless we in some way "touch the cross in this holy season then for us it loses some of its power. The Church calls upon all Christians to abstain as far as possible from worldly pleasure and to spend the time thus usually occupied in prayer, meditation and renewed effort after the fuller life. CARRYING YOUR OWN CROSS. If any man will come after me says Jesus "let him take up his cross and follow." Notice that it is
