Olive Schreiner at Nineteen."

Mr. Frank Harris relates in his Contemporary Portraits," anys "T.P.'s and Cassell's Weekly," how he met Olive Schreiner at the height of her fame as author of "The Story of an African Farm." The meeting took place at the offices of her publishers, Mesars. Chapman & Hall. Olive Schreiner was then about nineteen, "dis- tinctly pretty, large dark eyes, black hair, and little square strong figure the gure betraying the Jew in her more strongly than her face; yet the race characteristics were marked, too, in the slightly beaked noso and southern dark complexion. She told me she was the daughter of a missionary, and was born in Basutoland. Her Criticism..

Sir Edward Landseer related that his laundress, whom he des cribed as a sort of Mrs. Gamp, asked to see the pictures he had just finished for the Royal Academy, which, of course, whe was allowed to do; and after look- ing for some time at "Night" and "Morning"-"Night" showing two atags. their antlers locked toge- ther in deadly conflict. "Morning" the battle over and both combat- anta dead--said, "I hope, sir, you ain't going to ask me to take any- thing; but if you should, let it be the least drop of brandy and water, if you please, sir" That was her only remark on these two magnificent works. From "Sket- ches from Memory." by G. A. Storey, A.R.A.

To Guide the Prince.

The South African Government has just appointed Sir Howard Gorges, the President of the Board of Trade in the Union Government, to accompany the Prince of Wales on his forthcom- ing tour. This is an excellent choice, since the Prince's guide has an intimate knowledge of the whole of the Union of South Africa as far north as the Zam- besi, and he is an excellent sports- man to boot (according to the "Star.")

He is now engaged on the final draft of the programme for the tour, and it is hoped to forward this to His Royal Highness for his approval during the course of the next few weeks. •

Valentine Violets.

I don't know if the dealers had Been laying plans for St. Valen- tine's Day, but there arrived most wonderful appropriately some

violets from the Isle of Wight---- the new upstanding sort, which almost destroys the violet's re- putation for modesty, but which bears out very well Sidney's "proud purple mantles" and "as if the spring were all your own" (says a writer in the "Evening Standard.") Time was when Lon- doners did not satisfy St. Valen- tine so simply as with a bunch of violets. When the lovely Mrs. Stewart was at the Court of

A Compliment to Sir Hall Caine.

Among the many compliments which have been paid to Sir Hall Caine in the course of his life, there is one on which he always looks back with a pardonable and romantic prido, relates "Audax"

in "John d'London's Weekly. As Goo

a very young man he was invited to a party, the guests at which included many of the most pro- minent literary men and women of the day. To use his own words, he was "eitting quietly and shyly in an obscuré corner," when the door opened and Lord Houghton was announced. As he entered, the famous patron of letters hap pened to catch sight of the future. author of "The-Deemster," and disregarding the numerous friends who had risen to, welcome him," walked across the room to where Hall Caine was sitting. My young friend," he said, "I don't know what your name is, but you are the very image of the poet Keats!"
