BUILDING RAGING FURNACE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Shanghal, March 27. Fire broke out at 7.80 o'clock this evening in the large 5-storey building at the junction of Soochow and Museum Roads, the ground floor of which is occupied by the Shanghai Times" and the upper floors, by silk plece goods storerooms.

..

The blaze started in an upper storey,

Fire engines and ambulances from everywhere quickly arrived, including those from the station immediately opposite, but at 8.80 the: building was a raging furnace and it had botome impossible to save it.

The flames leapt 50 feet high.

EIGHT FIREMEN OVERCOME.

Dense smoke made it Impossible to approach from the windward side within fifty yards.

The firemen made heroic offorts to proveht the fire apreading and eight men were asphyxicated...

Motor cars and petrol supplies were removed from the China Motors' Eastern Garage, the adjoining building which was threatened.

THEATRE'S NARROW ESCAPE...

The Lyceum Theatre on the other side was also threatened and the roof was burnt.

"The Quaints," who have had to postpone their performance, have been busy removing scenery and props,

It is estimated that the value of the building and contents con- sumed by the fire amounted to four million taels.

At 10 o'clcok the walls only were standing and inside was a mass of flame. The building was expected to collapse any minute. « 6This is the biggest fire in Shanghai for years. The Country Club was also reported to be on fire but this outbreak is believed to have been quelled.
