ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ATTORNEY GENERAL.

(Reuter's American Service).

WASHINGTON, March 14, Mr. Gaston Means, former Secret agent of the Department of Justice, gave sensational evidence before the Teapot Dome investigation committee. He testified that in February of 1922 in Washington he received from Japanese represent ing a large Japanese firm $100,000 to end the Government prosecution in the standard aircraft

case.

Witness turned the money over to the late Mr. Jess Smith, a friend of Mr. Daugherty, the Attorney General,

Witness described himself as a money carrier in a transaction for Smith and others. He related that while maklog an "under cover" investigation which he bellaved was at the late President Hard- ing's instance he questioned Mr. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury, in connection with permits for withdrawals of liquors "and got him."

Means declared that he questioned Senators Caraway and la Follette after the latter had agitated for investigation of the Teapot Dome case.

Means who admitted that he had been employed as a German secret agent, and had been tried for murder, declared he learned of the source of the $100,000 from Smith.

A member of the committee reminded his colleagues that the records of the Daugherty impeachment case contained an allegation that Daugherty failed to prosecute the aircraft case, also that overpayment of $6,500,000 was made by the Government

SENTENCE DEFERRED.

(Reuter's American Service.)

NEW YORK, March 14.

Five members of the crow of the"" Orduna" have been tried on a charge of smuggling liquor and narcotics. They pleaded guilty and have been remanded for sentence until Wednesday,

Two other members of the crew who previously admitted guilt have also been remanded.

Mr. Clark, the Assistant District Attorney, asserts that the Orduna" has been used ever since the passing of the Prohibition Act as a vehicle for smuggled liquor. He claims she has carried $100,000 worth of contraband into New York,

Officials of the line, however, declare that any violation of the laws, if committed, was without. the knowledge of responsible officers and they deny all the charges.

An earlier cable stated that a party of Federal officials spent two hours on the "Orduna" breaking seals of the store rooms, and liquor bars, but they found ab contraband.)

QUESTION OF FUNDS.

(Reuter's General Service.)

LONDON, March 14,

The House of Commons by 211 votes to 129 rejected the second reading of the Trade Union Act 1913 Amendent Bill providing that when à Trade Union passes a resolution in favour of political action the members desiring to contribute to the support of the political objects shall indicate their desire in writing and shall not as heretofore automatically be included as, supporters unless they contract out..

Coinsworth (Conservative) moving the second reading said the object was to prevent Trade Unions from insisting on members paying contributions for political purposes which they did not believe. He asserted that members seeking to contract out were intimidated.

Mr. Tom Smith (Labour) moving the rejection of the bill, declared the reason for the bill was that the Conservatives were amxious with regard to the He denied the progress of the Labour party. allegation of intimidation and declared that if the trade unionists' political activities were hampered they would be compelled to rely more on strikes.
