SHAW'S NEW PLAY. MASTER PLAYWRIGHT'S BEST WORK.
The impression given by Mr. George Bernard Shaw's new play Saint Joan we read is "that for the first time in his career Mr. over-praised Shaw, had not himself.
. He,
to refused cut the play to enable sub- urbanite members of his, New York audiences to catch the last trains home, predicting that they would be too fascinated even to think about the time of their trains. He proyed a correct pro- phet, for though the curtain did not fall until after midnight, none of those present left before, the end.
Critics, however, are convinced that subsequent audiences will be less patient. While agreeing that Saint Joan is the most interesting play yet written by Mr. Shaw, they are positive that it will prove too long for casual playgoers.
In using the words How long, oh Lord, how long?" at the 'very close of the play Mr. Shaw, ns Bir. Alexander Woolcott observes, has taken a tremendous risk.
Whether Saint Joan will prove a phenomenal success as a drama iä a doubtful question to some of the leading critics. They declare that the story is clogged with supremely brilliant speeches in the Court scene, and in the scene between the Earl of Warwick and the Bishop of Beauvais, enthusiastically agreeing that these speeches clarify magni- ficently the theological and politi- cal questions involved.

The prospective new premises of a large London fimm are to in-| Eclude a light railway for conveying passengers to and from distant departments. The light railway idea is, of course, a development of the electric lift system, though I think a Paris store has gone one better than that (says a writer in the Westminster Gazette.) It is at the Magasins du Louvre, in the Duo de Rivoli, that one finds a moving stairway to take one from the street level to the restaurant on an upper floor. Such a means of transit being automatic, has the merit, from the shopkeeper's point of view, of not requiring an attendant, as does a lift, though I rather fancy that the shopwalkers at the Louvre have instructions to keep an eye open for possible novices in the use of this moving stairway. Certainly one such, a few hot summers ago, readily came to the aid of a provincial Britisher, when, unwary of the steepness of the moving slope, she nearly lost her balance and staggered, all outstretched arms and waving parcels, from the Inces

considering a scheme for the esta blishment of another air port at Mont Valérien to take the place of Le Bourget, The author of the proposal, M. Henri Sellier, points out that one very great advantage of the Mont Valérien aerodrome would be that passengers arriving there would only have to traverse the Bois de Boulogne in order to enter the capital, instead of having long road journey, as they now have, from Le Bourget. increase in the air traffic, which still continues, is sufficient, in M Seller's opinion, to justify the authorities in undertaking the establishment of a more convenient air port without delay, retaining Le Bourget as a depôt and repair *ing centre. :
