REPORT FOR THE YEAR.
The report of the Board of Directors of the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Ltd, to be pre- sonted at the ordinary yearly meeting of shareholders to be held at the Hongkong Hotel al 11.30 am, on Saturday, March 22 is as follows for the year ended 'December 31, 1923-
After providing for a bonus of 10 per cent. to the European Staff on their salaries and paying the usual bonus, to the Chinese Staff at Chinese New Year, the profit on Working Account for the year 1923 amounted to $1,582,813.54.

LONDON, March 5.-" Presiding at a lecture by the Hon. T. G Cochrane at the Society of Arts, on the "Ollfields of Sarawak," Lord Bearsted pointed but that the Sarawak field is only 630 miles from Singapore, and the development of the field had a very important bearing "on the Singapore Base question.
The protection of Sarawak was' LOCAL MOTOR TRANSPORT.most important because it was inconceivable that Great Britain would ever allow that wonderful field to fall into enemy hands.
Last summer, the China Mail pointed out the usefulness to be derived from a fleet of livery motor 'orries. It is not claimed that what has transpired is the direct result of our suggestion but quite a number of motor-lorries are on the streets now.
Companies
are operating on both sides of the harbour and it is stated that the traffic, is more than can be coped with. At any rate, one or two of the companies are calling for fresh which to instali capital with. additional lorries.
Practically every dénomination of merchandise is carried but the lorries do not seem to have been removing
furniture, used in
personal effects, &c.
Each lorry has its own coolies while regular gangs, who are paid for piece-work, are stationed at different places:
