Two previous winners, V. C. Bell of the Submarines and A. Mair were greatly fancied, but as the race tumed out, both had to give way to a new winner, Lieut C. D. Armstrong, M.C, of the East Surreys who covered the scheduled 6.1 miles In 35 minutes 40 seconds, 13 seconds slower than Bell's
record last year. Yesterday, Bell was overcome by a sharp pain in the chest and after making two. plucky attempts to continue, had to give up the chase very soon
after the start,
Towards the end of the race noar Bailey's shipyards at Hung- hom, with only five runners left, the contest rested between Lt. Arm strong, G. R. More and Mair who kept close together until they passed over the railway bridge into Chatham Road when Mair took slight lead. In Middle Road, going past Anzac House, More sprinted and went into first place, with Mair running second and Lieut. Armstrong third, only, a few yards. separating, each of them. More was soon overtaken and passed by Armstrong who spurted and increased'the distance between himself and More with every stride. Mair also found the hill trying and slowed up considerably. Lieut Armstrong finished many yards ahead of the others and was warin- ly applauded on his success, as were also the second and third men in. The two others to finish were: fourth, Pte. Heaver and fifth. Pte. Hesterman.
At the end of the race the prizes were presented to the winners by Mrs. Lindsay, wife of the Vicar of the Church, the presentation tak ing place in the Church. Hall. Before the presentation, the Rev. G. R. Lindsay said that this was the third annual event of the kind arranged by St. Andrew's Church Men's Association, and all would agree with him that it was the best of the three races. The race had come to stay, its popularity being shown by the large number of competitors this year who, he was pleased to note, included previous is of the size of a pea in its own winners.
