DAMP DERBY DAY.
COURTFIELD'S EASY VICTORY.
k
SMALE TOTE DIVIDENDS.
GOOD SPORT DESPITE THE RAIN.
Whatever else niay happen to make the event-memorable, it is certain that the Derby Day of the 1924 race meeting will go down as one of the dampest on record. The heavy showers which fell overnight had made the course: worse than ever and though a gang of coolies was employed to shovel sand over the track it was obvious that it was going to be another occasion when the best "mudlark" would.win.
Only a handful of spectators had turned up when the starters) in the first race were sent away. Eut Derby Day always attracts a crowd, whatever the weather, and a quite animated throng began to congregate about the stands as the time for the start of the big race approached.
H.E the Governor and Lady Stubby arrived shortly after
noon,
Courtfeld was felt to be "the only one in it" for the Blue. Rib -bon event while Dark Mouse and Jewel Dahlia II. were fancied in many quarters for second and third places. After yesterday's disappointing showing, which contrasted strongly with their phenomenally successful perform- ances on the opening day last year, the Dahlia ponies were at a discount.
By the time the first race had been run it was noticed that the ponies had left hoof-marks which were inches deep making it evi dent that the going would be yet heavier than yesterday.

CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor of the "Ching Mail."]|
Sir, I was shocked to read that letter addressed to your paper yesterday re last Sunday's sermon. I am surprised that any newspaper should print such a letter. I was at Church myself. I thought the sermon as good as any I have over, heard. I never want to hear a better, 1 don't know the preacher but listening to his voice last Sun- day I'd srake the shirt of my back that he is absolutely 18 carat. It was a brilliant serion-lucid and deeply reasoned, showing in my opinion, the preacher's deep insight (unusually so, for a padre) into life. The letter in last night's China Mail I considered absolutely Godless and full of malice.
Yours etc.

Eight Chinese cases of small- pox were notified yesterday.
