Addressing a Labour demonstration at the Albert Hall Mr. Ramsay Macdonald declared: "We are not going to take office in order to prepare fora. general election but in order to do work. LONDON, January 5
The Commons opened with a crowded atten- dance and an atmosphere of lively anticipation thanugh to-day's business was formal. The East-end Labourite arrived scorted by charabancs filled with partisans who livened the City en route with ; raules and cheering and the singing of “The R$8“ Flag." Lady Terrington, the first woman' to appear, was attired in black trimmed with white and fre quently surveyed the ladies' gallery with a tortoise- shell lorgnette. The wonen Labourites entered without hats which is unprecedented. Mrs. Philipson was the only Conservative woman present. Mr. Baldwin received Labour jeers and cries of "He is back again." Mr. Ramsay Macdonald received an ovation from his supporters. In Mr Asquith's absence, owing to a chill, Mr Lloyd George took Mr. Asquith's ' place and engaged Mr. Macdonald in conversation There were some declsive Labour cries when Mr. Macdonald joined Mr. Baldwin in procession in. obedience to the Black Rod's summons to the Lords to hear the King's request to elect a speaker.
