Through the recent death in Paris of a former shepherd boy named Jupille there was recalled the first man to be cured of rabies by the great Pasteur 38 years ago. Jupille attended his father's sheep in the little village of Wallery-Radet, in the Jura Mountains, when he was 14 years old. A huge dog, foaming at the mouth, appeared among the sheep, and Jupille and a half dozen other shepherd boys attacked and killed the animal, but not until Jupille had been biten. It took six days to get to Paris, where he received the first Pasteur treatment, and his life was saved. When physicians examined Mrs. Carrie McFeely, of Chicago, they were puzzled by her anaemic condition, Inquiry revealed that the mother of five tubercular children, though healthy herself, had been "bootlegging" her blood in Chicago hospitals, in blood transfusion operations in order to support her family after they had been deserted by her husband. In the last operation she yielded a quart of her blood, for which she received $50. The doctors notified her that another blood transfusion would kill her.
