DEATH OF THE ONLY COCKNEY SEA-LION.
neglect of an 18-months-old sea- Tho death--from maternal lon
has caused very genuine sorrow at the London Zoological Gardens.
In the first instance great hopes; centred on the well-grown infant. It was believed that all records the first real cockney" sea-lion, would be broken by the rearing of It was very hard luck that for some reason or other the mother tired of her baby after a year and a half instead of looking after the youngster for the full two years.
When the poor little beggar was seen to be playing with pieces of fish which he did not know how to eat or digest, while his mother fawned upon visitors for undeserv ed dainties, everything was done to save the life of the interesting infant.
Mashes of fish and milk were placed in front of him, but as he had not been properly weaned, he did not seem to be able to tackle the new diet. When it was placed in his mouth he merely tried to bite the hands that fed him. Slowly he lost his strength without gaining any appetite for the new foods that were urged upon him-and so the end came.
