The Poincaré Government emerged successfully from attack on its proposals as regards allowances to public servants owing to the higher cost of living. the Chamber, by 392 votes to 169 having rejected the amendment, which was equivalent to a no-con- fidence notion in the Government.
The Chamber, subsequently, by 339 votes to 211, defeated an amendment which M. Poincaré also regarded as a question of con fidence. The Government.pm- posal to maintain the cost of living bonus at 720 francs, plus additional allowances for a family was agreed lo, instead of the 1,800 francs demanded by the Socialists.

The President seemed to hold the view repeatedly ex- pressed by responsible American officials, namely, that the time was not propitious. He is reported to have declared that in view of the general conditions in Europe, he did not believe that France would agred to any deduction of aircraft consequently, a conference, would- be fruitless.
