SERIOUS AFGHAN SITUATION,
LONDON, December 17. There is a grave situation on the Afghan border owing to the Afghan Government not yet com plying with the repeated demands of the Indian Government for the surrender of murderers of British subjects. Afgisan police attempts to arrest the culprits have been un- successful qwing to the hostility of the population, amongst whom Bolshevist emissaries are spread- ing anti-European propaganda.
In view of the situation the familles of Europeas Diplomats at Kabul have been escorted Peshawar.
The Governmerit of India is con- fident that the Amir will consent to hand over the nairderers, but in the meanwhile they are taking such steps as seen a visable.
The Afghan Minister to Parts is credited by the Matin with expres- sing strong anti-British sentiments. alleging that Great Britain is de- sirous of annexing Afghanistan, and declaring that if Afghanistan be invaded, the Afglans will defend themselves to the last man? moreover, they have friends in Turkey and Russia.
COMMUNIST DISCORD,
RIGA, December 17. Advices from Moscow state that, the Communist Party's new prò- gramine, which was proclaimed on December 5. involving extensive freedom of speech among the rank and file of the Communists, has caused serious discord among the Party leaders.
Kamenev, on December 11, was forced to defend himself against the attacks of Sapronov, Preobraz hensky, Smirnov and others who accused the Party's Central Com mittee of arrogating to themselves too much authority and 'not con- sidering the wishes of the rank and
file.
Kamenev, in replying, reproach ed Radek with supporting the malcontents and warned members against converting the new reform into a mere struggle for power.
The Sovice Official Press states that the situation is most grave and the only salvation consists in the Party preserving complete unity while accomplishing present forms.
GREEK CRISIS.

His Honour Justice Wagner, of the Supreme Court has signed 40 order making cffective the recent decision requiring De Valera Stack and Bartman to testify against the Free State in the Free State's suit to impress money from legal banks, which has been di posited in the name of the Irish Hongkong 30 cents sub, Republic,
The order directs that if De Valera and the ottiers be interfered with for the purpose of preventing them, testifying, the injunction against the withdrawal of funds will be dissolved, and the Free State will be forever barred frqin pressing its suit.
The brder stipulates that De Valera and others must testify be fore the Anerican Consul-General in Ireland between January 1 and February 28-Reuter's American Service.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the National Almanso Ulice in London from the result of the Knalysis of observations taken by means of an automatio tide-recording machine in the Water Police Basin at Taim Sha Tsai during the years 1008-9.
The raro of the table-corresponds with the zero of the sounding in the Admirelty Chart, which has been found to be a fost
inches below mean sea-level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gange ab the Victoria Naval Yard add 8 feet 4 inches, and on the gange at Lamont Dock, Abandoon, add 10 feet Inches to the height given in the table.
