REPUBLICIANS DEMAND DEPOSITION.
ATHENS, December 17.
The election has been a contest between Liberals and Republicans. According to the results so far known the Deputies elected to the Constituent Assembly comprise almost solely moderate Venizelists and Republican Venizelists, the former predominating. A proportion of the Republicans voted against Venizelos. The Republicans aré clamouring for the deposition of the dynasty. It stated that Colonel Plastiras, the revolutionat leader, is determined to prevent untoward events.
INDIAN POLITICS.
SWARAJISTS DECLINE OFFICE.
CALCUTTA, December 17.
Mr. Das has replied to the Governor regretting that he is unable to undertake ministerial gé sponsibility, the Swaraj party having decided not to accept the offer. Mr. Das points out that the Swarajists are pledged to put an end to the diarchy which it would be unable to do if he took office wak they would not consider it honest to accept and t
proposal. They had not been consulted and need not be consulted thereanent, consequently he was not in a position to give any definite information. He understood that no decision had yet been reached but should a sale be effected the interests of the other shareholders would be fully protected.
Referring to criticisms with regard to the Com- pany's" colossal "expenditure, he declared that the value of the new territory hitherto proved had far exceeded the cost of the whole of their testing operations. Dealing with future prospects he said no improvement could be expected in the current in the following year if the prices of their products year but a substantial improvement was expectable did not further decline.
It appeared pretty certain they were not far from the point at which the demand would again overtake the supply. The unexpect- ed increase in production in the United States resulting in abnormally high prices was nearly exhausted while the fact that the world's consump tion of oil products was increasing by leaps and bounds must accentuate the reaction towards the recovery of prices.
